Windows Accessories

Windows comes with the usual sort of accessory programs to play around with and these are listed under Programs, Accessories and we have various utilities and programs to create documents, manipulate pictures, play sounds, games and so on. These programs are listed below with more information for the new stuff.

Accessibility

These tools can now be found in the Control Panel, Ease of Access section.

Magnifier Program allows those with sight difficulties, to magnify portions of the screen to make it more readable
Narrator Program to speak out selected text and buttons and whats on screen to you
On-Screen Keyboard Program to allow you to use the mouse to type in characters and numbers instead of the keyboard
High Contrast Set up a high contrast display for hard of sight.
Speech Recognition Use a microphone to speak into to control the computer

System Tools

Character Map Displays character set from given Fonts and allow you insert them in your documents for the hard to find characters
Internet Explorer The old style web browser (Edge is the browser)
Private Character Editor Create and modify private character fonts.

Tablet PC

Shape Collector Tool for personalised handwriting recognition for tablet input.
TabTip Table keyboard tool

Other Tools

Maths Input Panel Tool to allow entering of complex mathematical equations.
Mobility Center Mobility tools for laptops only.
Notepad Simple text program to write notes or view log files, readme files and so on.
Paint Program to create or manipulate pictures or photos you have taken to your tastes
Quick Assist Enables two people to share a computer using a remote connection (Get or Give Assistance)
Remote Desktop Connection Program to allow users to remotely login to other computers which allow Remote Desktop connections (see System control panel).
Snipping Tool Program to grab portions of a screen, window, rectangle or free form areas into the clipboard to paste into another program.
Steps Recorder A program to record the steps to a file of a task performed. File saved as zip file containing a mht document.
Windows Fax and Scan A Program to create, send and receive facsimiles (fax). Requires a fax device e.g. fax/modem.
Windows Media Player Program to play audio and video multimedia files.
WordPad A simple word processor program to quickly write some documents. Does not have any advanced stuff such as Spelling, Mail Merge and so on for advanced Word Processors such as Word, WordPerfect, Works which are available seperately.
XPS Viewer Program to display XPS (XML Paper Specification) files which are an alternative to PDF files.

Windows Apps

Calculator Program to work out simple or complex calculations. It a scientific mode for more complex calculations.
Camera Program to capture photos or video via your web camera
Cortana Search, help and control (see Speech Recognition)
Films & TV Buy or rent recent films or TV programmes
Food & Drink Display food and drink information (see MSN Food page)
Get Office Download and install Microsoft Office
Groove Music Get and play music from your music collection or from the store
Health & Fitness Health and fitness information (see MSN Health page).
Mail Electronic Mail program
Maps Display map of local area, national or international locations
Microsoft Edge New web browser
Money Display money information and news
News Latest national and international news
OneNote Make notes with free OneNote app
Photos Display and manage your photos
Phone Companion Synchronise your phone with Windows
Reading list app Add web page articles to a list for reference and access later
Skype Preview Download and run Skype for internet telephone and chat

Other programs that used to be in the Accessories have moved to the Control Panel or as an app in the the Menu App list such as Games, Mail, Calendar, Travel, Internet Explorer, Store, Music, News, Sport, Video.

All accessories and games can be install via Programs and Features control panel and click on Turn on or off Windows Features.
