Guide to Explorer

Explorer has been enhanced since Windows 7 with new features, including replacing the explorer menus and taskbar with a ribbon with all the options for managing files. The ribbon has tabs for File, Home Share and View which extra options for special folders. The ribbon can be shown or hidden by selecting the up or down arrow at the top right.

The File tab has a menu to Open new window, open command prompt, open windows powershell, delete history, help and close.

The Home tab has file management options to copy, paste, cut, copy path, paste shortcut; move to, copy to; delete, rename; new folder, new item, easy access; properties, open, edit, history; select all, select none and invert selection.

The Share tab has special options to email, zip, burn to disc, print, fax; create or join a homegroup, specific people, stop sharing and advanced security.

The View tab has options on how to view files in the windows with navigation pane, preview pane, details pane; view extra large icons, medium-sized icons, list, large icons, small icons or details; sort-by, group by, add columns, size all columns to fit; item check boxes, file name extensions, hidden items, hide selected items; and options.

In each explorer window, on the left side, you will get a list of Favourites containing your favourite folders, OneDrive (if installed), Homegroup, This PC and Network.

Windows 8 continues to use special folders for multimedia purposes such as Music, Pictures and Videos. When you open these folders then you get some special Tools in the ribbon of the Window. For example:


The Music folder above has special tools such as Play, Play all, Play To and Add to playlist.

The Pictures folder has special tasks such as Rotate left, rotate right; Slideshow, set as background and Play to.

The Videos folder has special tasks such as Play, Play all, Play To and Add to playlist.

These special features can be enabled by clicking on the properties of the folder, select Customise and then change optimise this folder for Documents, Music, Video, or Pictures and the new tasks will appear.

To find files, use either the Search this PC option in the naviagtion bar at the top right.
