1. What is Android?
Android is a operating system developed for mobile devices such as the modern smart phone, tablets, TVs, cars and smartwatches by Open Handset Alliance, led by Google Inc
.
The OS is written with a number of languages including Java, Kotlin, C, C++, Rust and others and uses a modified Linux kernel.
The first version of Android was released on 23 September 2008. The current version is Android 15.
2. Can I install Android?
Smart devices that can use Android already has Android pre-installed so there is not need to install it.
If the OS is corrupt, non-functioning orjust needs a complete cleanup, you can perform a reset which will revert the device back to factory levels. If you select Settings, System,
and then Reset options where you can perform a reset on network, bluetooth, device settings, app preferences, baseband settings or an Erase all data. This final option will remove
accounts, music, photos, videos, texts, notes, downloads, app settings and any downloaded apps. This setting may be in a different place or different name depending on vendor and OS version.
If ever selling or passing on your phone to a new owner, then always do a reset first to remove any personal data.
3. Can I update Android?
Yes, updates, bug fixes and security vulnerabilities can be applied to your OS. See Settings, System Updates and run Check for updates. You can also view Update History to see when the last update
was applied. Updates may be released every month or so depending on vendor and OS version. Note that Android can have upto 2-3 year life span before an upgrade to next version of Android is
required. If the device is too old, then the only way to upgrade, is to replace the device with a more recent model.
4. Can I install or remove apps on my device?
On some devices, especially smart phones and devices, you can install new apps via the built in Google Play Store app. Use the search feature to look for the required app , check the About text, also read
the reviews and ratings to make sure that it is suitable for you. Click the Install link to download the app, a Wi-Fi connection is cheaper and faster, otherwise use data connection via Mobile network.
To remove an app, go to the appropiate page in Play Store for the app, and click on Uninstall , you can also run an Update if required.

6. Can I pay for things with my phone?
Yes, if your phone has the Wallet app and has your Debit or Credit card uploaded and it supports NFC (Near Field Communication) for contactless payment, you can use your phone rather than your physical card.
Note, that sometimes you do need to use the physical Chip and PIN method sometimes, so always bring your Debit or Credit card along, if the Payment device asks for it.
7. What is a QR or bar code reader?
Sometimes instead of having to type in a internet address or access a specific site, you can use a Quick Response (QR) Reader type app, that will read a two-dimensional matrix made on up what looks like a random
max of black squares and convert into a readable alphanumeric string for a locator, identifier and web tracking. You may see that on streaming TV channels, car parks, tourist locations and so on.
8. Can I install a newer version of Android or a different OS on my old phone?
It is possible to install a newer version of Android or a completely different OS. Note, doing this my prevent some applications from working due to hardware or security considerations.
Other non-standard OS' can be installed such as Manjaro, Ubuntu, LineageOS, Paranoid Android, ProtonAOSP, GrapheneOS and CalyxOS. See iFixit.com site for details.
